Pork / Cepea retrospective: External demand remains firm in 2024; prices reach nominal highs
As expected by the national pig sector, foreign demand for pork remained firm throughout 2024, with Brazilian exports of the protein reaching new records. According to data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), in 2024 the Brazilian export sector surpassed the historic mark of 1.21 million tons reached in 2023. From January to November 2024, Brazilian pork shipments totaled 1.23 million tons, 11.2% higher than the volume shipped from January to November/23. On the domestic market, the performance was also positive for agents in the sector. Trading values for live pigs and meat reached the nominal highs of Cepea's respective historical series. Cepea researchers indicate that the boost to values came from heated domestic and foreign demand, the restricted supply of animals for slaughter and gains in the competitiveness of pork protein in relation to beef on the domestic market. And the sector's higher prices, coupled with the devaluation of the main pig farming inputs, such as corn and soybean meal, allowed pig farmers to expand their margins.
