São Paulo to lead Brazil's agricultural exports in 2024 and overtake Mato Grosso
São Paulo took the lead in Brazil's agricultural exports in 2024, accounting for 18% of the national total in the first nine months of the year and surpassing the traditional leader, Mato Grosso. São Paulo's agribusiness recorded a 9.2% increase in exports, totaling US$22.69 billion from January to September, according to data from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA-Apta).
With this performance, São Paulo came ahead of Mato Grosso, which had a 17.3% share, followed by Paraná (11.5%), Minas Gerais (10.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.7%) and Goiás (6.6%).
“Every month we see the strength of São Paulo's agribusiness in the trade balance. The numbers demonstrate our efforts, with high-quality agricultural production and competitive prices. Despite the severe drought, São Paulo showed its strength once again,” said Guilherme Piai, the state's Secretary of Agriculture and Supply.
São Paulo's agricultural trade balance
In the year to date, the São Paulo agribusiness trade balance recorded a surplus of US$ 18.45 billion, an increase of 8.9% compared to the same period in 2023. Exports represented 43.5% of the state's total, while imports accounted for 7.5%.
The survey highlighted the growth in exports of several products, with emphasis on:
- Green coffee: increase of 121.6%;
- Pulp products: growth of 15%;
- Beef: increase of 39%;
- Orange juice: increase of 27.5%.
The main export groups were:
Sugar and alcohol complex: US$ 9.15 billion (sugar 93% and ethanol 7%);
Meat: US$ 2.49 billion (beef 83.9%);
Forestry products: US$2.35 billion (cellulose 54.3% and paper 38%);
Soy complex: US$2.10 billion (soybeans 78.8%);
Juices: US$2.00 billion (orange juice 98%).
These five groups accounted for 79.7% of São Paulo's agribusiness exports. Coffee, with sales of US$944.21 million, ranked sixth, with 71.4% of green coffee.
